Today's Young Readers are our Future Leaders!

Welcome to the Newspaper In Education (NIE) program!

This program forms a partnership between area businesses, community organizations, school systems, and The Advocate-Messenger. Our goal is to develop skilled readers, effective communicators, critical thinkers, and informed citizens who will lead our community and nation in the future.

Through NIE area schools are offered a unique opportunity to expand and enhance classroom instruction by integrating up-to-date information and making a real world connection that is not only
motivating but adds real-life dimension to the classroom.

NIE kidHow the program works: More than just a newspaper, the NIE program enriches instruction by providing innovative teaching materials, unique classroom projects, and special youth features. As a result, thousands of K-12 students and adult learners are given the opportunity to learn more about the people, places, and events happening in their community and world.

Our Mission

The Advocate-Messenger Newspaper In Education program strives to promote literacy, develop life-long readers, and to provide teachers with a real-world learning resource for their classrooms.

The NIE program is committed to making OUR newspaper and materials available to fill in gaps left by the amazing changes taking place in our world right now that textbooks can't keep up with.

We need YOUR help!

Newspaper In Education is one of the most exciting educational tools available today. Last year, The Advocate-Messenger provided more than 200,000 newspapers to area schools. Each year more and more teachers ask to participate in this program. The Advocate-Messenger provides newspapers to area schools by donating 75% of the cost. The rest of the cost is covered by donations from readers ... and most importantly by local businesses and business leaders, like you, who make up our Partners in Education.

A recent study shows ...

NIE students scored 10% higher! The Newspaper Association of America Foundation commissioned
a study to find out if Newspaper In Education really works. The results -- Students in schools with at least
some NIE programs scored 10% better on standardized tests than students in schools that had no NIE
programs. The newspaper is an excellent tool to enhance critical thinking, increase vocabulary and
improve skills in a wide variety of subjects. NIE is a strong tool for teachers seeking solid achievement for
students. In other words -- NIE works!

Promoting Literacy

The daily newspaper is a dynamic textbook that chronicles our times and stimulates young minds. Think
about how the newspaper keeps you informed about world events, the economy, and local news. What you
may not realize is the newspaper gives you a daily lesson in geography, economics, math, technology,
science and social studies. It is the most up-to-date textbook available.

How do students benefit?

Newspapers are just the beginning of the NIE experience. We provide teachers at all levels, from
kindergarten to adult education, with the tools to provide new ideas and programs that they can use
in the classroom for current events, science and social issues that affect their lives. Using newspapers
as a teaching tool or resource helps teachers develop competent students in basic skills like reading
and math.
The newspaper is an ideal classroom tool because:

* Newspapers are timely and relevant. Current affairs come alive, while ads deal with real products, prices
and events.

* Newspapers motivate. There is something in every section to interest students: comics, sports, ads,
photographs and local features.

* Newspapers are adaptable. Students can read, cut, paste, fold, tear, color and write on a newspaper ...
and then recycle it.

* Newspapers help prepare students for state and national standardized tests.

Promoting literacy in our community is something all business people and concerned citizens should take
very seriously.  After all, today's young readers are our future leaders.
