Vaught named Kentucky Sportswriter of the Year

The Advocate-Messenger’s Larry Vaught has been named Kentucky Sportswriter of the Year by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association.
Mary Jo Perino of WLEX-TV in Lexington was named Kentucky Sportscaster of the Year.
Vaught has worked at The Advocate-Messenger since 1975 and has been sports editor since his father’s death in 1996.
He previously was named Kentucky Sportswriter of the Year in 2003, 2006, 2007 and 2008 and has won numerous other Kentucky Press Association awards as well as one from the United States Basketball Writers Association.
He was president of the Kentucky AP Sports Editors Association from 1984-1991 and currently is third vice-president of the National Associated Press Sports Editors Association.
He has been chairman of the Bob Allen Pigskin Classic since 2000 and also is on the Hall of Fame selection committee.
He was a columnist for The Cats Pause from 1976-2004 before joining Kentucky Sports Report as a columnist.
He also worked for WVLK Radio and now WLAP Radio in Lexington and is on the UK football pregame show. He has also done local radio shows promoting local sports.
In 2009, he was inducted into the Danville Schools Athletics Hall of Fame and named a Danville High School Distinguished Alumni.
