Birth surprises Harrodsburg woman

March 9, 2010

An unexpected delivery Thursday threw a shocking twist into a Harrodsburg woman’s “To Do” list.

Kelly Bottom, 32, said she was doing laundry about 2 p.m. when she felt some discomfort, thinking she needed to use the bathroom. When the pain intensified, she said she realized she was actually in labor with a child she did not know she was carrying.

Bottom said she delivered a baby boy on the floor of her bathroom, even cutting the umbilical cord herself. What she did next was perhaps only slightly less remarkable.

Instead of calling for an ambulance or driving to the hospital, Bottom said her first thought was that her 7-year-old needed to be picked up at school. Bottom called the child’s father, Ronnie Sims, who was at work in Perryville, but he was operating heavy machinery and could not hear the phone.

“I had tried to call (Ronnie), but I dropped the phone and he wouldn’t have been able to pick up anyway,” Bottom said. “I knew there was nobody else who could go pick (my son) up so I cleaned myself up the best I could and went to the school.”

After that, Bottom went to Sims’ mother’s house and debuted the new bundle for Grandma.

“She came up to the door with the baby all wrapped up and my mother said ‘Whose baby is that,’” Sims said. “When Kelly said, ‘It’s mine,’ Mom said you could have blown her over.”

Not surprisingly, the story of the surprise delivery has been greeted with disbelief from most who have heard it.

“When we first got to the emergency room, the woman there thought I meant I had him a few weeks and not a few hours before,” Bottom said.

Healthy baby

The baby, who likely will have the most unique origin story no matter who he is with, is in good health, Bottom said. Brian Keith Sims, whom doctors said was actually past due, weighed in at 6 lbs. 15 oz. and measured 19 inches long when he finally arrived at the hospital Thursday night.

When mother and baby were discharged from the hospital Monday, Brian was up to 7 lbs. 3 oz. and doing fine.

When Bottom had her first son, she went through the normal series of prenatal doctor’s checkups. However, with this most recent pregancy, she said she did not recognize any of the telltale signs that there was about to be an addition to the family.

She worked up until last week and said the call to her employer was one in a long line of interesting conversations she’s had about what happened.

Even though the outcome appears to be a happy one, the couple are awed at the rarity of delivering at home and the severity of health problems Bottom could have experienced.

“The doctor said she is very, very lucky there was no hemorrhaging or other complications,” Sims said. “I have not stopped thanking God that he took care of them and hopefully he will keep on doing that.”
