Danville to celebrate National Dance Day Saturday

July 30, 2010

A judge on a popular television show is encouraging the world to dance and stay fit, and his message is cha-cha-ing throughout the nation. “Dancin’ in Danville” will be the local celebration, set for Saturday at Millennium Park.

Paula Meckes, a dancer and dance instructor who is organizing the local event, says Dancin’ in Danville is a way to promote dance “as an art form and a fun way for fitness.” The event will include an instruction session of the dance routine that is being taught and learned nationwide, as well as performances by dancers and dance groups. Once the national dance is learned, it will be recorded and uploaded to www.dizzyfeetfoundation.org.

According to that website, “So You Think You Can Dance” judge Nigel Lythgoe is launching National Dance Day as part of his commitment to support dance education and physical fitness in communities throughout the United States. Lythgoe founded Dizzy Feet Foundation in 2009 with director Adam Shankman, “Dancing with the Stars” judge Carrie Ann Inaba and actress Katie Holmes to help underprivileged young people realize their dream of becoming professional dancers and to support, improve and increase access to dance education in the United States.

National Dance Day will include a variety of dance-themed activities for people of all ages. It is intended to empower, challenge and inspire everyone to try various styles of dance ranging from hip-hop to ballroom to anything that moves. It also is intended to encourage everyone to dance as a means to stay fit and be healthy.

“We want families to come out. ... We hope young and old come out and learn the dance,” Meckes notes.

Meckes adds her daughter, Alex, and she watch “So You Think You Can Dance” every week. When they saw the promotions for National Dance Day, the decided they needed to do something locally.

“We want people to come out and enjoy dancing,” she says.

The national dance is on the Dizzy Feet Foundation’s website, if interested attendees want to get a head start on learning it.

SO YOU KNOW

A National Dance Day celebration will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the baseball complex at Millennium Park. The last hour of the event will be a street dance for everyone to get up and move to popular music. The celebration is for all ages and is intended as a family event. T-shirts will be for sale to commemorate the National Dance Day for $10. Proceeds from the shirts will go to The Arts Commission of Danville/Boyle County’s youth scholarships for dance classes. For more information, contact local organizer Paula Meckes at (859) 583-1848.
