Powwow coming to Richmond

RICHMOND — Come and experience Native American culture and customes at the 2016 Richmond Powwow on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 24 and 25 at the Richmond Battlefield Park, 1546 Battlefield Memorial Highway south of Richmond. Gates open at 10 a.m. with grand entries at noon on both days and at 6 p.m. on Saturday. Closing ceremonies will be at 4:30 p.m. Sunday.
This year’s special guest will be Larry Sellers who portrayed “Cloud Dancing” on the television series “Dr. Quinn: Medicine Woman.”
Powwows are the Native American people’s way of meeting to join together with dancing, singing, and renewing old friendships as well as making new ones. It is a time honored method to renuew Native American culture and to preserve the rich heritage of the American Indian.
Visitors can experience Native American crafts, singing, dancing, folklore, as well as learn about their way of life by various interactive presentations. Guests will be encouraged to participate in the rituals and traditions occurring throughout each day.
The Richmond Powwow began in 1994. Hosted by the Richmond Powwow Association, Inc., it has become one of the most attended Powwows in a several-state area.
General admission is $5 per person, $2 for children under 12. Maximum fees per family is $15.
