Contractors and small businesses will once again have a place in Boyle County to take their trash when the Republic Services Dillehay Street transfer station opens Monday.

The transfer station will be open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to noon.

“This is something the judge and I have been working on for many years, including our solid waste committee,” Solid Waste Director Donna Fechter said.

Fechter said years ago, when Republic Services took over Allied, the company shut down the Dillehay transfer station, meaning contractors and small businesses had to take their waste to other counties, she said.

Now, the transfer station will once again be available for people to have their waste weighed and disposed of for a fee.

“I think it’s a real service to the community,” Judge-Executive Harold McKinney said.

Fechter said the rate for use of the transfer station is $55 per ton with a minimum of $30.

There are additional state fees along with the initial charge.

“These are fees that have to happen,” Fechter said.

A Kentucky environmental remediation fee costs $1.75 per ton, a fuel recovery fee adds 4.85 percent and an environmental recovery fee adds 13 percent.

Initially, the station will only accept non-hazardous municipal solid waste, Fechter said.

Restricted items include batteries, tires, liquid waste, propane tanks, enclosed and sealed containers, used oil, wet paint, large appliances, compressors or other hazardous wastes.

In other solid waste news, fence wire recycling will start next week in Perryville and will be available to farmers until November.

This is a free service available for six weeks to farmers in Boyle County. Farmers will be asked to show a proof of residence in Boyle County, as those living outside the county are not eligible for the service, Fechter said.

“Fence wiring is especially important to our farmers,” she said.

Fence wire must be clean and wooden posts should be removed.
