Plans for a new trail from Stanford Road to Henson Pond took a step forward last week as the City Commission approved the acceptance of a grant from the Department for Local Government Office of Federal Grants.

“This is really a continuation of the Clarks Run Trail,” City Engineer Earl Coffey said. 

The awarded grant will fund a 4,080-foot trail that is 10-feet wide, including trailside facilities, from David Avenue and Stanford Road to East Main at Henson Pond. The trail will be called the Alliance Trail. 

Right now, it is referred to as the Henson Park Trail because the Henson family have been significant donors in the project along with several others, Coffey said.

The estimated cost for the trail is $130,024. The grant is from the Department for Local Government Office of Federal Grants and the City of Danville received federal approval of the application for a reimbursement of $65,012, which also requires a local match of the same amount. 

Coffey said, right now, the city obligation is $10,000 cash, and the CVB is also contributing cash for the local match. He said the local match really comes from the CVB and the City.

The City Commission approved and signed the memorandum of agreement for the trail on Monday.
