McDowell House receives grant to be used for protective windows

McDowell House Museum announces it is the recipient of a 2016 grant provided by the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels. This grant will provide for secondary windows that have UV protection properties in the museum’s dining room, kitchen, apothecary, library and parlor.
The Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels is a non-profit 501(c)3 charitable organization of talented and capable men and women appointed by the Governor of the Commonwealth of Kentucky because of their service to the state. They act as the Governor’s ambassadors of Kentucky’s heritage and rich history of arts and entertainment.
The primary objective of the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels is to support needy Kentucky charities and worthy Kentucky organizations by raising money from the Order’s membership to help these organizations who stand ready to help citizens share in Kentucky’s boundless future. The Kentucky Colonels celebrate this mission and encourage and affirm one another in these efforts.
McDowell House Museum is a non-profit and National Historic Landmark. The museum is the former home and office of Dr. Ephraim McDowell, and is believed to be the site of the famous surgery he performed in the early 1800s. In 1809 Dr. McDowell led a surgery to remove a tumor from Mrs. Jane Todd Crawford. It was the first surgery of its type in the entire world and saved her from certain death. She lived another 32 years, to the then ripe old age of 78. Tours of the furnished home and office are available Monday-Saturday from 10-12 and 1-4, and 2-4 on Sundays. Visitors should arrive by 3:30. For winter, starting in November, the museum is closed on Mondays.
