Annual Christmas Bird Count needs volunteers

The 117th National Audubon Society Midwinter Bird Count will be held in the Danville area 8 a.m.-5 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 17.

This is the 68th consecutive year that Danville has participated in this national event. Last year, 27 volunteers counted more than 13,000 birds representing 55 species in the Danville count area.

On count day, nine teams of three to four members will identify and count the birds seen or heard as they travel in their designated sector of the count area: a 15-mile diameter circle around the Boyle County Courthouse.

Birding expertise is not required to participate. Drivers, spotters/counters, and recorders are as important to each team as the identifiers. Each team will include at least one experienced count volunteer.

There is no charge for participants and membership in the Audubon Society is not required.

Arts and Crafts Bazaar

LANCASTER — The 16th annual Lancaster Arts and Crafts Bazaar will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 18 and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 19 at the Up With Youth building, located on East Buford Street, one block south of the Garrard County Courthouse.

More than 21 booths will be filled with unique and useful merchandise, depicting the crafters’ talents from Berea, Richmond, Nicholasville, Lexington and Annville. Some of the offerings include needlepoint pictures, doll clothes and beds, reclaimed wood signs, farmhouse crafts, primitive decor, Christmas decorations, purses, soaps and lotions, quilts, hats and scarves, just to name a few.

There will also be homemade candies, cookies, fried pies, and gingerbread houses for sale.

Volunteers with the Up With Youth organization will serve lunch both days which will be choice of soup or chili, sandwich, dessert and drink for $5. All proceeds from the sale of lunches will go to fund activities of organization.

The public is invited and admission is free.

Names added to Wall of Honor

Three new names have been added to the Veterans Wall of Honor at the Boyle County Fairgrounds.

They are: W. David Horn, United States Air Force, Vietnam; Frank Durrett, United States Army Air Force, 1943-1945; and Ralph A. Speakes Jr., United States Marine Corps, 1971-1976.
