Danville has more preschool students than the school district has room for, Board of Education members learned Monday night.

Officials proposed a plan to lease a day care facility to help house students.

“It’s a great problem to have,” Superintendent Keith Look said.

Little Lighthouse leases property at 410 W. Walnut St. in Danville. The board approved subleasing that space for the duration of the school year for $600 a month including utilities. The district will use the space to house some of its preschool students from 7:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Monday through Friday. The district will use the playground behind the building and three parking spaces for district employees.

The district is currently housing preschool students at Hogsett Elementary School. Officials expect to have an additional eight to 10 preschoolers by Jan. 1.

Other business

Nine Toliver Elementary School students — six third-graders, two fourth-graders and one fifth-grader — were recognized by Principal Ron Ballard during the meeting.

“It’s my pleasure that this is becoming an annual event with us to recognize the students who are distinguished in all content areas at their grade level,” Ballard said.

Jennifer Green, instructional coach at Hogsett Elementary School, was recognized by Hogsett Principal Leo Labrillazo for obtaining her doctorate of educational leadership from the University of Kentucky.

The board also learned that the Danville-Boyle County Economic Development Partnership was “impressed” with the district’s work regarding employability and soft skills, according to Look.

“The Workforce Development Committee of the EDP is focusing on this,” he said.

The committee works to help unemployed and underemployed people in Boyle County.

The board also:

• approved a half-time learning and behavioral disorder teacher in the special education program at Jennie Rogers Elementary School; and

• approved a plan to surplus electronic devices, such as computers, a projector, and a few iPads.
