Danville will spend about $27,000 for additional work on Weisiger Park and the Third Street streetscape improvement projects.

Danville commissioners approved a change order for the work at a commission meeting on Monday, Nov. 28.

City Engineer Earl Coffey said $22,000 worth of work will include concrete work for the planned water curtain in Weisiger Park. Another $5,293.92 will be spent for flat work adjustments to concrete in Weisiger Park.

In order to save money and prevent the city from having to rebid, officials decided to use the same contractor for both projects and merge them together, City Manager Ron Scott said.

“It’s really just one merged project,” he said, which allows the city to use competitive rates they received under an earlier bid for wiring, lighting and concrete. 

“We were trying to save money, so we went with the combined approach,” Scott said.

As of right now, Scott said the city is still working on completing the plumbing arrangement for the water curtain.

The supports that have been installed around the pergola — a wooden structure with plants growing on it — are also being painted, he said. 

Scott said he’s hopeful the main structure of the water curtain could be brought to the park and installed this week.

Once the structure is placed, workers will do brick work around it, he said. 

“We are trying to bring it all to a close,” Scott said.

When commissioners approved the change order last week, they also asked about whether or when certain features would be added to Weisiger Park. Those features include a drinking fountain and benches.

Coffey told commissioners he is still working on orders for benches. He is also looking into placing trash cans in the park. A drinking fountain is in the works, but officials have more to discuss before that can happen, Coffey said.
