STANFORD —  Lincoln County Public Library will host a free, four-part reading, viewing and discussion series for adults called Pushing the Limits. The library is one of 54 rural public libraries nationwide receiving grants to host the series. Pushing the Limits brings together books and video featuring authors, scientists and everyday people who thrive on exploring the natural world.

All programs will be held at Lincoln County Public Library, 201 Lancaster St., Stanford. For details or to register, call the library at (606) 365-7513. The first program will be held 6 p.m. Jan. 26. Program materials are available now.

Since the beginning of time, humans have imagined and achieved ways to push the boundaries of the physical world. We want to be stronger, smarter, and more aware, and we create stories to bring those dreams to life. But many of those stories are no longer just stories; and with great new advances in science and technology, we are finding ways in which all of us are able to push the limits every day.

The Pushing the Limits program will explore these ideas in discussions that will include feature film quality videos and recommended popular books. The overarching theme is one of real people, real stories and real science.

Group discussion events will be held once per month on the following topics and books:

• Nature: T.C. Boyle, “When the Killing’s Done”

• Connection: Erik Larson, “Thunderstruck”

• Survival: Clive Cussler, “Arctic Drift”

• Knowledge: Jean Auel, “The Land of Painted Caves”

Miranda Woodall, education outreach specialist from Alltech, will lead a discussion of the book and videos of author interviews and human interest stories. To obtain copies of program materials, contact Jimmie Lou Abney, adult program coordinator with the Lincoln County Public Library.

This national program has been developed by a team of library professionals, scientists, and filmmakers. Their organizations include Dartmouth College, the Association for Rural and Small Libraries, the Califa Group (a California-based library consortium), Dawson Media Group and Oregon State University — with generous funding from the National Science Foundation.

The library is open 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday, and 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday. The library will also host Explore Tech: Engineers Make a World of Difference Jan. 21-March 11.

Community Story Times

Also, Lincoln County Public Library presents several Community Story Times around the area. Community Story Times are for children 18 months to 5 years old and their caregivers, and includes fun, age appropriate stories, songs and activities. Story times are free and open to the public. If Lincoln County does not have school, story times will be canceled.

• McKinney: 10 a.m. Mondays, beginning Jan. 9 at McKinney Baptist Church, 2765 Highway 198 Hustonville

• Waynesburg: 10 a.m. Tuesdays, beginning Jan. 10 at Pleasant View Baptist Church, 13571 KY. 1247, Waynesburg

• Crab Orchard: 10 a.m. Wednesdays, beginning Jan. 14 at Crab Orchard City Hall, 224 Main St, Crab Orchard

• Hustonville: 10 a.m. Thursdays at Westside Community United Methodist Church, 2875 US 127-North, Hustonville
