DeVos a bad pick for education secretary

Dear Editor,

As a retired educator, I read with concern facts from USA Today about the nominee for education secretary, Betsy DeVos.

DeVos and her children have never attended public schools, which gives her little experience with public schools. DeVos is not supported by the American Federation of Teachers and the National Education Association, which portends a major cooperation and empathy dysfunction in her future job efforts.

Also, DeVos dodged questions about combating campus sexual assault in her senate hearings. When asked if she would uphold guidelines used to fight sexual assalt on college campuses under current Title IX guidelines, she dodged the question with no firm yes.

Haven’t we had enough of confrontational, dysfunctional public servants? For anyone who cares about public education, who has a daughter on a college campus, or will have, and who is concerned about violence against women, we must email, write or call our congressmen about denying this political appointment. Even if you think this effort is in vain and Congress will do what it wants to do, your voice will be noted as being informed and your eyes watchful on your elected officials and their actions.
