The Boyle County Public Library offers many fun, educational events throughout the year. Weekly programs include Crafters Who Care 6 p.m.  Mondays, Storytimes on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings, and Coding Clubs 4 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays.

In addition to these weekly events, the following library-sponsored programs are scheduled for this week:

• Tween Advisory Group (TAG)

Tween Advisory Group will meet 4 p.m. Monday. TAG provides a way for tweens to have fun while volunteering their time at the library.

This month TAG will be making scratch art and completing a puzzle collage. For more information about tween programs, see Kate Prusick in the Children’s Library. (Ages 9-13)

• Friends of the Library Annual Meeting and Tea

The Friends of the Library will kick off their Spring Program Series at the Friends Annual Meeting and Tea 5:30 p.m. Thursday, in the Community Room. The program will feature the Kentucky Humanities Council presentation of “Axis Prisoners of War in Kentucky” by Dr. Richard Holl.

This event is free and open to the public. An interpreter for the deaf is available upon request by contacting the library 48-hours in advance at (859) 238-7323. The program will be followed by the annual meeting.

This presentation is about German prisoners of war held in Kentucky during World War II. Fort Knox, Camp Campbell, and Camp Breckinridge set up facilities to hold thousands of POWs who were captured in Europe and North Africa and sent to the Commonwealth.

When a severe shortage of workers plagued the agricultural sector due to the war effort, the German POWs were pressed into service, bringing in much of the Kentucky tobacco crop in the fall of 1944 and the fall of 1945.

They also harvested tomatoes, strawberries, and other fruits and vegetables. German POWs were repatriated in 1945-1946 and a fascinating episode in Kentucky history came to an end.

• Teen Book Club

The Teen Book Club will meet 4 p.m. Friday. The book club, for ages 13-18, will be discussing “Between the World and Me” by Ta-Nehisi Coates. Snacks will be provided. To receive a copy of the book, please see Julia Basil at the library.
