Hospital auxiliaries offer scholarships for high school seniors

Auxiliaries for Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center and Fort Logan Hospital are each offering two scholarships for the fall 2017-spring 2018 school year.

The Teen Scholarship and the Auxiliary Health Care Scholarship are available to current high school seniors and the application deadline is March 15.

To be eligible for either the Teen Scholarship or the Auxiliary Health Care Scholarship, students must be in the top 25 percent of their class; have a minimum ACT score of 21 or SAT score of 1000; and have the intent to enter into an approved healthcare career program at a regionally accredited college or university in Kentucky.

In order to qualify for the $500 Teen Scholarship, students must also currently participate or have participated in the Auxiliary Teen Volunteer program while in high school.

Auxiliary Health Care scholarships are for high school seniors in Boyle or Lincoln counties and provide $1,000 for the first semester. They are renewable for a second semester if the recipient earns a 2.5 or higher grade point average in the initial semester.

Programs of study that are eligible for coverage are at the discretion of Ephraim McDowell Health and subject to change. Children of Ephraim McDowell Associates will be given preference.

To apply, individuals should print and complete the application available online at emhealth.org and include scholastic records and recommendations from at least two instructors and one guidance counselor or advisor.

Art classes can participate in Vans shoe design competition

Shoe and clothing company Vans is inviting high school art students throughout the U.S. to participate in its eighth annual Vans Custom Culture art competition.

High school art teachers can register their classes to compete for a grand prize of $50,000 for their school’s art program by creating artistic and inventive designs using blank Vans shoes as their canvas.

Registration for the competition is open until 5 p.m. Feb. 10. Teachers can register at customculture.vans.com.

Students will be provided with four pairs of blank Vans shoes, which they can decorate and modify to represent four themes — action sports, arts, music and “local flavor.”

Vans employees and an internal judging panel will assist in selecting the top 50 schools to be featured as semi-finalists. Those 50 schools will then be posted online for a public vote between April 26 and May 10. That vote will determine five finalists, who will receive an all-expense paid trip to Los Angeles to show their shoes to a panel of celebrity judges.

The overall winner will earn $50,000 and sponsored related prizes for the school’s art program. The four runners-up will each receive $4,000.
