HARRODSBURG — Three arrests have been made relating to vandalism that occurred at Old Fort Harrod State Park in January.

Brandon Hellmig, 19, of Harrodsburg and two juveniles were arrested and charged on Friday for their alleged roles in the crime, which caused the death of one the park’s sheep.

“We had tips that helped out,” said Officer Chad Baker with the Harrodsburg Police Department.

Multiple tips indicating the same person led officers to the alleged culprits, he said.

Baker said the vandalism occurred on two separate occasions on Jan. 13 and 14. Obscene graffiti was spray-painted on walls, a fire extinguisher was sprayed inside an exhibit and a window was broken in the park’s gift shop. He said it appears the sheep was let out and its death “was caused by them.”

The teens told Baker they had “been drinking,” prompting them to commit the acts, Baker said.

On Wednesday, the Mercer County Crime Stoppers and the Friends of Fort Harrod State Park offered a reward for information leading to the arrests.

Hellmig was charged with unlawful transaction with a minor; Hellmig and one juvenile were charged with two counts of burglary. The other juvenile, who Maker said only participated in vandalism on one of the two days, was charged with one count of burglary.

All three were charged with second-degree animal cruelty and first-degree criminal mischief.
