Out with the old: Old humane society kennels demolished

The Danville-Boyle County Human Society said farewell Friday to the building that had been its home for nearly 40 years.
“It’s out with the old and onward with the new,” said Fizzy Ramsey, president of the Boyle County Humane Society. “Our dogs, volunteers and prospective adopters will will enjoy some additional green space to stretch their legs or soak up a sunny day.”

Workers with Apex Plumbing Solutions began tearing down the humane society’s old building, which was built in 1978, on Friday morning.
Zach Gammon with Apex said it was a bittersweet job to have.
“I think I actually adopted one or two dogs (in that building),” he said. “If I ever get a dog, I try to save one. It’s just kind of bittersweet tearing the old kennels down.”
Gammon said while Apex has been primarily a plumbing business, it’s expanding into many other areas of construction, including demolition. It will soon shorten its name to “Apex Solutions.”
After water was shut off to the building, the roof was removed. Concrete blocks from the building would be recycled as backfill in a parking lot elsewhere, Ramsey said.
“The chain link (fence) has already found a home at a neighboring animal shelter in need,” she said. “There’s a lot going on, but we’re still open for adoptions and there are plenty of amazing pets who need forever homes.”
The humane society cut the ribbon on its new building, the Katherine E. Nelsen Adoption Center, in early September. By January, staff and animals were settling into their new digs.
The new building was named after Kathy Nelsen, a former executive director of the humane society and co-founder of the Happy Paws Spay/Neuter Clinic. Nelsen spearheaded the fundraising effort for the new building; she died of cancer days after the building’s ribbon-cutting ceremony.
