1944-2017

Vernon Helton, 72, of Lancaster, passed away Monday Feb. 13, 2017 at his home.

He is survived by his loving wife, Sonja. Vernon was born April 7, 1944 in Rockcastle County, Ky. to the late Ezra and Mable Benge Helton.

Vernon was a life long entrepreneur. His many business ventures included V.L. Helton’s Union 76 Service Station, Helton’s Dairy Freeze, Western Steer Steakhouse, Helton’s Dollar Plus, and Lee’s Famous Recipe. He ventured into real estate by developing Helton Estates and Camp Dick Acres in northern Garrard County along with many other properties.

Vernon was also a dedicated member of Forks of Dix River Baptist Church. He was a Trustee while also participating in the committee that built a large addition including the Family Life Center. Also surviving is three daughters, Gail Dismeaux (Kendall) of Danville, Sharon Fyfe (Mark) of Danville, and Vicki Naylor (Rob) of Lancaster; three brothers, Tony Helton (Brenda) of Ohio, Kenny Helton (Ellen) of Florida, and Danny Helton of Lancaster; seven sisters, Bernice King (Larry) of Ohio, Joyce Chance (Harold) of Ohio, Patsy Hamner (Gene) of Lancaster, Linda Rouse (Gary) of Florida, Anita Todd (Cletus) of Stanford, Nina Kane of Colorado, and Becky Land of Cynthiana; six grandchildren, Tiffany Jones (Justin), Hillary Asberry, LCpl Will Fyfe, Mary Alice Fyfe, Keeley Naylor, and Chance Naylor; three great- grandchildren, Carson, Carter, and Maddox Jones; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Vernon, along with his parents, was preceded in death by a daughter, Tammie Helton; a brother, Clabern Helton; a sister, Edith Boyer; and a great-granddaughter, Annistyn Jones.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 18, 2017 at Forks of Dix River Church with Bro. Jerry Browning, Bro. Cole Caven, and Bro. Bill Rhodus officiating. Visitation will be 5-9 p.m. Friday at Spurlin Funeral Home. Burial will be in Lancaster Cemetery.

Pallbearers are Larry Duggins, Brent Duggins, LCpl Will Fyfe, Chance Naylor, Justin Jones, Kendall Dismeaux, Mark Fyfe, Rob Naylor, and Chris Ball. Honorary pallbearers will be the grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and Bro. Bill Rhodus Sunday School class members.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Los Brazos de Dios Mission in El Salvador through the Forks of Dix River Baptist Church.
