HARRODSBURG —  Local resident Tim Joyce has joined with four local farmers to form Today’s Harvest, a multi-farm Community Supported Agriculture project serving Boyle and Mercer counties. In a multi-farm CSA, at the beginning of the growing season, consumers purchase shares of the produce that is to be grown on the farms that season. When the consumer makes that investment in the farms they become a “shareholder” in the food produced that season by their local farmers. 

“Today’s Harvest is bridging the gap between the local farmers and the busy consumers who want to support them,” said Tim Joyce, CSA manager. 

On a weekly basis during their 25-week growing season, Today’s Harvest will gather from their local farmers the best of the fresh local produce which is available that week and deliver it to their customer’s home or business. Each customer will receive approximately 7-10 different items that are available from the local farmers weekly, May through October (25 weeks). The produce will be delivered in a sturdy reusable box to the customer’s doorstep every Wednesday and will be exchanged for the prior week’s empty box. There are also more options to add items such as eggs or meat to the weekly delivery. 

“It is estimated that the average American meal travels about 1,500 miles to get from farm to plate,” according to cuesa.org.

The benefits of a local CSA like Today’s Harvest are numerous such as fresh food, supporting local agriculture, eating healthier, better prices, better tasting food, the opportunity to meet the ones who grew your food, exposure to new foods, keeping your money in the local economy, the list goes on.

People who cook and enjoy trying new foods should join the CSA to experience the difference fresh and local makes. They will receive a lot of vegetables and although each week’s box will be different, usually the same vegetable will appear for a few weeks in a row. Therefore, they will be trying new recipes to use them up in creative ways. Today’s Harvest will help with supplying new recipes weekly. 

Spring has sprung so now is the time to support local farmers and get fresh local food by signing up for Today’s Harvest CSA.
