McDowell Place of Danville will host “Senior University” beginning April 11. Senior University is an educational series offering persons over age 50 a varied program of learning opportunities designed for intellectual stimulation, cultural experiences and personal enjoyment.

The dates and topics of the educational opportunities are as follows:

• Tuesday, April 11 — Four New Voices:  Untold Stories of the Civil War in Kentucky; All Kentuckians lived the Civil War in their everyday struggles to survive, overcome, and understand this most critical time in United States history. These stories remind us that Civil War battles did not just happen on rolling hillsides under flying flags. By Patrick A. Lewis, Director, Civil War Governors of Kentucky Digital Documentary.

• Thursday, April 13 — Monkey See, Monkey Run!;

In this session, we will examine the fascinating habits of Green Monkeys and their anti-predator behavior on the predator-free island of Barbados. By Dr. Melissa Burns-Cusato, Centre College.

• Tuesday, April 18 — University of Kentucky Sports;

Let’s recap the past UK football and basketball seasons while also looking ahead to what next season might bring. By Larry Vaught, Vaught’s Views.

• Thursday, April 20 — The Science of Bourbon;

In this session, you’ll not only learn how bourbon is made, but you’ll start to understand why America’s only native spirit has sparked such pride and passion among Kentuckians over the decades. By Jarod Smith, Wilderness Trail Distillery.

• Friday, April 21 — A Glimpse into Ecology: Those Amazing Species Interactions!; Looking for an overview of core concepts in ecology? Just wondering what the heck ecology is? This session is for you. Learn how organisms interact with each other and with their environment to make an amazingly complex and beautiful network. By Stephanie L. Fabritius, Vice President for Academic Affairs, Dean of the College and Professor of Biology, Centre College.

• Tuesday, April 25 — Antiques Roadshow: McDowell Place Edition; Join us for a fun and interactive antique appraisal. Bring in an old family heirloom or collectable to share with the group. Limit one item per person. No coins, money, stamps, weapons, or sports memorabilia. By Jerry Sampson, Accredited Senior Appraiser, Owner of J. Sampson Antiques, Books and Appraisals.

• Thursday, April 27 — The History and Future of Manufacturing: Making Things in a Changing World;  

From the cotton gin, robotics and now, more modern “smart” products, manufacturing has changed dramatically over the years. We will discuss how manufacturing has evolved and what direction we are headed next. By Adam Grigsby, Advanced Manufacturing Instructor, Bluegrass Community & Technical College, Danville Campus.

• Friday, April 28 — Antique Beauties to Present Day Pretties: Our Love Affair with Quilts Continues; 

You will be amazed at the beautiful quilts in this collection. Cora Mossbrook will share her new and antique quilt collection with us and compare the various materials and methods that were used to create these works of art.

Each program begins at 10:30 a.m. and will last 45 minutes to one hour. McDowell Place of Danville is located at 1181 Ben Ali Drive.

McDowell Place is an independent living, assisted living and personal care community that offers four levels of residences. Independent living allows for individuals to maintain their independent lifestyle without the concerns of home maintenance. Assisted living is for individuals who need a caregiver to assist with such tasks as bathing or medication reminders.  Personal care is offered to residents who require the assistance of a nurse for care and/or medication administration. Respite care is available to individuals who want to see if McDowell Place is right for them or who need care on a temporary basis due to a recent hospital stay or are in need of rehabilitation.  The facility appeals to individuals who aren’t comfortable living alone yet want to maintain their independent lifestyle.
