Fort Harrod Back Country Horsemen (FHBCH) honored Tom Herndon, of Nicholasville, and Charmaine Kern, of Harrodsburg, as “Volunteer of the Year” recipients during the organization’s recent annual meeting. Herndon’s and Kern’s names were added to a plaque in the Mercer County Cooperative Extension Service office.

Herndon has been trail riding since 1985 and joined FHBCH in 2009. He was named treasurer and director for the organization that year, fulfilling an unexpired term for another member. He remained as treasurer and director for six years, setting up the organization’s accounting and email systems.

Herndon also helped lead trail rides and participated in fundraisers and service projects.

Kern has been riding her entire life and is a Riding Master, a certified instructor and trainer in all disciplines, and a clinician at many national horse expos.  She teaches whole horsemanship at her facility in Harrodsburg, designing training plans to meet each individual’s needs and goals.

“Fort Harrod Back Country Horsemen generally presents one Volunteer of the Year award each year,” said Emily Dennis, Harrodsburg, FHBCH president. “When the board realized the vote for the award had ended in a tie between Tom Herndon and Charmaine Kern, we were relieved.  Tom has been with Fort Harrod BCH since the beginning.  He spent a lot of time developing our bookkeeping and email list.

“Charmaine, on the other hand, is new to our community but not new to the horse industry.  She has freely shared her expertise at so many Fort Harrod Back Country Horsemen events in the past year.  Our organization thrives because of active members like Tom and Charmaine.”
