‘All Wrapped Up’   

Trees, poles and statues around Danville have a pop of color thanks to the All Wrapped Up project through the Danville High School art classes. And — some highschoolers learned how to be crafty.

Students and their teacher, Shelly Stinnett, wrapped the items at the school, the Community Arts Center, the campus of Centre College and the Boyle County Public Library over the week, using the hundreds of scarves and other items. Some were made by students and others were donated, Stinnett said.

Students learned the crafts throughout the school semester and completed the project as part of a grant from VSA Kentucky, meant to encourage inclusion in the arts for all people, especially those with special needs.

From 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday at Danville High School, community members will have a chance to try their hand at knitting, crocheting, finger knitting and more. Also, individuals can add their input to a community weaving piece, which will use fabric, string and more, Stinnett said, and will be encouraged to walk to the various locations to see the work that has been done. It will remain up through Wednesday.

“I want to say thank you — I’ve never had so much community support for a project,” Stinnett said on Thursday, explaining that there had been a variety of guest artists visit the school, and lots of yarn donated.

“I have no idea how many skeins of yarn we used,” she said.

Stinnett said they were grateful to the library and the arts center for letting the students place the items there. Inside the facilities, there are baby hats on display, which will be donated to the Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center, and baby blankets.

After the event, the scarves will be donated, first to the Beacon Youth Services Center at Danville High School, and then to the district’s other centers.
