Scot Anthony Wayne Walters

Scot Anthony Wayne Walters, of Frankfort, 47, passed away on Sunday, April 2, 2017. 

As a child growing up in Versailles, Scot loved trains, building, and arranging his things “just so.” This early awareness of his surroundings led him to study and graduate from the School of Architecture at the University of Kentucky. He experienced pivotal moments in his life when he studied abroad in Venice, Italy, for a semester and interned at Cosanti Foundation in Arizona. These experiences inspired his life’s work – good design, new urbanism, and historic preservation. He created and invested in a life in downtown Frankfort with his wife Marnie and daughter Margi because he believed in walkable communities, pedestrian advocacy, and the efficiency of living in the city core. He walked to work at The Kentucky Heritage Council/State Historic Preservation Office for 20 years, where he recently retired as a respected site development program manager. Frankfort and the entire state benefitted from his passion, dedication, and the successful implementation of the tax credit program.

When he wasn’t fighting tirelessly for good architectural and urban design, he enjoyed locally crafted beer, bonfires, Formula 1 racing, Shaker Village, Envision Franklin County, local food, and completing his own preservation projects. All were indicative of his love for quality craftsmanship and high standards. No matter where he was, his talent, honesty and fieriness made an impression. 

His battle against cancer was fought with the conviction and determination of all of his battles, yet he lost. He leaves behind a family who loved him deeply and will miss him daily – a family proud of who he was – Marnie and Margi; Libbie, his mom; Wayne, his deceased father; Todd (Ann) and Matt (Jennifer), his brothers; Sally, his dog, and the many colleagues and friends he acquired through the years.

A celebration of life is planned for Thursday, April 27, 2017 from 3 until 5 p.m. at the Old Capitol in downtown Frankfort located at 300 W. Broadway, followed by a bonfire at Josephine Sculpture Park, 3355 Lawrenceburg Road, Frankfort, KY.
