This week’s events at Boyle County Public Library

The Boyle County Public Library offers many fun, educational events throughout the year. Weekly programs include Crafters Who Care 6 p.m. Mondays, Storytimes on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings, and Coding Clubs 4 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays.

In addition to these weekly events, the following library-sponsored programs are scheduled for this week:

Local Poet Night

On Monday, April 24, at 6 p.m., in honor of National Poetry Month, the library will be hosting a Local Poet Night featuring Yolantha Harrison-Pace and Chad Horn. These two local poets will read select poems and talk about writing their new book of poetry.

Nutrition Condition (Week 4)

On Thursday April 27, at noon, the library will be hosting “Nutrition Condition,” a health and wellness workshop series offered in partnership with the Boyle County Cooperative Extension Office. Workshop participants will learn how to improve their nutrient intake and learn how to eat better on a budget. Registration is encouraged.

The library Celebrates DÍA

As the nation’s population continues to become more diverse, the Boyle County Public Library will join libraries across the country in celebration of El día de los niños, El día de los libros (Children’s Day, Book Day), alsoknown as DÍA.

The library’s DÍA celebration will be held on Thursday, April 27, at 6:30 p.m. in the Children’s Storytime Room at the library. Families will have the opportunity tohear a story toldin two languages, try new foods, and participate in fun activities.

DÍA is a celebration of children, families, and reading. The celebration emphasizes the importance of advocating literacy for children of all linguistic and cultural backgrounds. DÍA is an enhancement of Children’s Day, which began in 1925. Children’s Day was designated as a day to bring attention to the importance and well-being of children. 

In 1996, nationally acclaimed children’s book author Pat Mora proposed linking the celebration of childhood and children with literacy to found El día de los niños,El día de los libros.

Teen Book Club

The Teen Book Club will meet at the library on Friday, April 28, at 4 pm. The book club, for ages 13-18, will be discussing “The Alchemyst” by Michael Scott. Snacks will be provided. To receive a copy of the book, please see Julia Basil at the library.

Kentucky Writers Day: Writers Tribute

As part of the 2017 Kentucky Writers’ Day Celebration weekend, the library will host a Writers Tribute on Saturday, April 29,  from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Over 20 authors, poets, writers, playwrights and journalists with a Kentucky connection will be reading from original works. In addition, there will be book signings by various authors at this free event.

Kentucky Writers’ Day was established in 1990 by the Kentucky General Assembly to honor Kentucky’s strong literary tradition and to celebrate the anniversary of the birth of Robert Penn Warren, the first poet laureate of the United States and winner of three Pulitzer prizes.

The 2017 Kentucky Writers’ Day Celebration Weekend will run April 23-30 at various locations throughout Danville and at historic Penn’s Store in Gravel Switch. A complete listing of the schedule of events can be found online at www.pennsstore.com.

Computer Classes

In the ongoing effort to promote lifelong learning, the Library offers a wide variety of free computer classes every month. The following classes are scheduled for this week:

Typing on Wednesday, April 26,  at 11 a.m.

Intro. to Microsoft PowerPoint on Thursday, April 27, at 4 p.m.

Job Seeking Class on Thursday, April 27,  at 6 p.m.
