Boyle County girls dominate second day of region tennis tournament

The Boyle County girls tennis team already has a perfect regular season under its belt. Now the Rebels are aiming for the region tournament title.

Two singles players and a doubles team from Boyle advanced through Monday’s two rounds and into today’s semifinal round at Centre College. No. 2 seed Anna Duncan will face No. 4 Amber Pierce of Casey County at 5 p.m., and No. 8 Mia Kendrick takes on top-seeded Casey Kibler of East Jessamine at 5:30.

Boyle’s fourth-seeded team of Kate Leahey and Laura Nolan will battle No. 1 Alexa Slone and Courtney Gettler at 5:30 p.m.

Duncan won her first match Monday easily, beating Pulaski County’s Natalie Hampton 6-0, 6-0. She then faced Danville’s Elizabeth Joiner, winning 6-3, 6-3. Joiner beat Morgan Munsey of Wayne 6-4, 6-4 in the round 16.

Pierce beat Mercer County’s Gracie Caton in the first match, 6-0, 6-4, then topped Charity Nickell of Somerset 6-2, 6-4 in the quarterfinals.

Kendrick bested Annabelle Graves of Danville in her first match, 6-4, 6-1. She then beat Pulaski’s Emma Calfee 6-4, 6-1 in the quarters.

Garrard’s Vivianna Cordova lost in the round of 16 to Charity Nickell of Somerset, 6-0, 6-2.

Rebekah Trent of Mercer won in the round of 16, 6-2, 6-3 over Southwestern’s Andrea Martinez, before losing to Kibler 6-0, 6-0 in the quarterfinals.

The girls doubles bracket is also cluttered with area teams. Top-seeded Gettler-Slone beat Makenzie Clouse and Devan Neely of Somerset 6-0, 6-1, then they survived a tough quartefinal match with Kaitlyn Gardner and Prestley Roberts of Wayne County, 7-6 (5), 6-3.

Leahey and Nolan advanced to the semifinals with a similar path. They topped Casey’s Rebekah Cochran and Abigail Crew 6-3, 6-1 in the round of 16, then they rallied to beat Ruth Ramos and Alex Horn of Berea in the quarters, 1-6, 6-3, 1-0 (11-9).

Casey’s Sarah Harne and Laci Lee moved on to the semifinals as well. They beat Julia Bengelsdorf and Emily Traw of Berea 6-0, 6-1 before topping Isabella Martin and Laila Cook of Pulaski 6-1, 6-2 in the quarters.

Mercer’s Ania Boutin and Kiersten Bryant lost to Gardner-Roberts 6-4, 6-1.

Mercer’s Raegan Long and Avery Thompson fell to Cook-Martin 6-3, 7-5.

Garrard’s Kaitlyn Beauchamp and Charity Browning won 6-2, 6-0 over Somerset’s Laila Qasem and Jordan Roy before losing to Graves-Kibler 4-6, 7-5, 1-0 (11-9).

Local boys team will have one representative in today’s semifinals when Garrard’s Cameron Carver and Stevie Morgeson take on No. 2 Amin Katanbaf and Johnathan Nickell of Somerset at 5:30 p.m. at Bate Middle School.

Carver and Morgeson beat Danville’s Anas Gondal and Dawson Forth 6-0, 6-1 before besting Boyle’s Adrien Van Steenlandt and Josh Bishop in the quarterfinals 7-5, 2-6, 1-0 (10-4).

Van Steenlandt and Bishop advanced to the quarters with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Ethan Barren and Jacob Senters of West Jessamine.

Two other doubles teams also made it to the quarterfinal round. Boyle’s Jackson Mesplay and Sam Clark beat Pulaski’s Josh Lockard and Jackson Martin 2-6, 6-5 1-0 (10-3) before losing to top-seeded Brody Bilderback and Tanner Sparks of West Jessamine, 6-0, 6-0.

Casey’s Luke Coffman and Austin Harne beat Lincoln County’s Kade Bandura and Carter Story 6-0, 6-2 in their first match, but they lost to Caleb Miller and Dawson Hellard of Madison Southern in the quarters 6-2, 6-3.

Jackson Ponder and Luke Johnson of Casey lost to Katanbaf-Nickell in the round of 16 6-3, 6-2.

In singles play, Boyle teammates Luke Duncan and Chase Frisby made it to the quarters. Duncan beat Josh Underwood of Casey 6-0, 6-2 before falling to No. 2 seed Landon Puckett of West Jessamine 6-3, 6-4.

Frisby beat Mercer’s Bryson Marcum 6-1, 6-2 in his first match and lost to Wayne’s Corbin Kirksey 6-3, 6-2 in the quarters.

Garrard’s Jesse Abrams lost in the round of 16 to West’s Luke Morris 6-0, 6-0, and Lincoln’s Travis New also lost his first match, 6-0, 6-0 to Kirksey.
