‘Empty Bowls’ at Grace Café raises $500

“Empty Bowls” filled up about 45 hungry people and raised more than $500 for the pay-what-you-can restaurant Grace Café Thursday evening.
The annual Empty Bowls event featured pottery made by around 125 students from Bate Middle School and Danville High School’s ceramics class, as well as local potter Paul Muth.
Attendees made a donation of at least $10 and got to take home a bowl of their choice and enjoy soup from Grace Café.
Grace Café is a non-profit restaurant with a goal of reducing food insecurity among local residents. Food insecurity is the “USDA’s measure of lack of access at times to enough food for an active, healthy life for all household members,” according to Feeding America.
There were an estimated 4,400 food-insecure people in Boyle County in 2015, representing about 15 percent of the county’s population, according to the most recent data from Feeding America’s annual Map the Meal Gap study. That number is down from 16.1 percent in 2014 and 17.1 percent in 2013, according to Map the Meal Gap data.
