The Boyle County Public Library offers many fun, educational events throughout the year. Weekly programs include Crafters Who Care 6 p.m. Mondays, Storytimes on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings, and Coding Clubs 4 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays.

In addition to these weekly events, the following Library-sponsored programs are scheduled for this week:

• Third Thursday Book Discussion Groups

The library offers a variety of book discussion groups each month, including the Third Thursday Morning and Evening Book Discussion Groups which meet 10 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. at the library on the third Thursday of the month. These groups are designed for anyone interested in discussing a wide variety of books in a group setting.

Both groups will meet on Thursday, May 18. The Morning Discussion group, which is led by Diana Draper, will discuss “The Autobiography of Mrs. Tom Thumb” by Melanie Benjamin. The Evening Discussion group is led by Stephanie Donovan and will discuss “The Butterfly’s Daughter” by Mary Alice Monroe. Those interested in participating in either group may pick up a copy of the book at the circulation desk. 

ª Nutrition Condition (Week 7)

On Thursday, May 18, at noon, the library will be hosting “Nutrition Condition,” a health and wellness workshop series offered in partnership with the Boyle County Cooperative Extension Office. Workshop participants will learn how to improve their nutrient intake and learn how to eat better on a budget. Registration is encouraged.

• Talk of the Town: The Danville High School Forensics Team

The Friends of the Library continue their Spring Program Series on Thursday, May 18, at 4:30 p.m. with “Talk of the Town,” featuring Danville High School’s Forensics national competitors. Members of the award-winning DHS Forensics team will perform monologues and dialogues they have written and developed.

The DHS Forensics team won the 2017 Kentucky High School Speech League State Speech Tournament for the second straight year, earning the school’s seventh state title since 2006. Some of the events in which the team competes include dramatic interpretation, oratory, storytelling and declamation. The DHS Forensics team is coached by Steve Meadows, head of the English department at DHS.

• Sharing the African-American Experience: Second Street and Beyond

On Saturday, May 20, at 1:30 p.m., the library will host “Sharing the African-American Experience: Second Street and Beyond.” This personal history event is a community conversation about the importance of preserving local history and the ways photographs can help us understand the African-American experience in Boyle County.Program attendees are encouraged to bring historic photos they would like to share, as well as any questions they may have about the archiving process.

Guest speakers will be Michael Hughes, director of the Danville/Boyle County African American Historical Society; Mary Girard, assistant reference librarian at the library; and Robert Trumbo, retired from Danville Schools. A photo scanning demonstration will also be given during the program.

This free event is sponsored by Centre College and DBCAAHS, and is made possible through a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities. The program will be held in the Community Room at the Library. Refreshments will be served.

• Computer Classes

In the ongoing effort to promote lifelong learning, the Library offers a wide variety of free computer classes every month. The following classes are scheduled for this week:

Email Basics on Monday, May 15, at 2 p.m.

Introduction to Microsoft Word on Wednesday, May 17, at 2 p.m.
