The Boyle County Public Library offers many fun, educational events throughout the year. Weekly programs include a Summer Coding Club 4 p.m. Mondays, Crafters Who Care 6 p.m. Mondays and Storytimes on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings. In addition to these weekly events, the following Library-sponsored programs are scheduled for this week:

• Jane in July: Book Discussion of ‘Pride and Prejudice’

On Sunday, July 16, at 3 p.m., the library will host a book discussion of “Pride and Prejudice” by Jane Austen. This event will be led by Helen Emmitt and John Kinkade, English professors from Centre College. All are invited to participate in the discussion. Multiple copies of the book are available at the library’s circulation desk.

• Tween Advisory Group (TAG)

Tween Advisory Group will meet on Monday, July 17,  at 2 p.m. TAG provides a way for tweens to have fun while volunteering their time at the library. For more information about tween programs, see Ms. Logan Anderson in the Children’s Library. For ages 9-13.

• Cardboard Box Fort Challenge

On Tuesday, July 18, at 1 p.m., teens can test their engineering design abilities when creating mammoth forts out of cardboard boxes. Following construction, the forts will be demolished in a water balloon battle. This event will be held in the Library Park, weather permitting. For ages 13-18.

• Kid’s Book Club

On Tuesday, July 18, at 2 p.m., the lbrary will host the Kid’s Book Club. The club will meet weekly during the summer on Tuesdays at 2:00 p.m. for children who are going into grades 1-3. Each week we’ll read a different book from one of our favorite series. This week we’ll be reading “Encyclopedia Brown: Super Sleuth” by Donald J. Sobol. Children are invited to come discuss the books, participate in trivia, and enjoy snacks. Registration is required.

• Ronald McDonald

OnWednesday, July 19, at 10:30 a.m., the iconic clown Ronald McDonald will entertain his fans with a silly performance about reading. This popular program is open to all ages and will be held in the Community Room. Due to limited seating, this will be a ticketed event. Tickets are free and will be given out 30 minutes prior to the start of the show.

• Summer Science Clubs

On Thursday, July 20, the Summer Science Clubs for kids will meet at 10 a.m. (for 5-6 year olds) and 11:30 a.m. (for 7-8 year olds). Each week will feature a different science experiment. Both clubs will be held in the Storytime Room in the Children’s Library.

Third Thursday Book Discussion Groups

The library offers a variety of book discussion groups each month, including the Third Thursday Morning and Evening Book Discussion Groups which meet at the Library on the third Thursday of the month at 10 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. respectively. These groups are designed for anyone interested in discussing a wide variety of books in a group setting.

Both groups will meet on Thursday, July 20. The morning discussion group, which is led by Diana Draper, will discuss “Guarded” by Angela Correll. The evening discussion group is led by Stephanie Donovan and will discuss “Can’t Wait to Get to Heaven” by Fannie Flagg. Those interested in participating in either group may pick up a copy of the book at the circulation desk in the library.

• Tween Event: Giant Jenga Poetry

The library will host Giant Jenga Poetry on Thursday, July 20, at 2 p.m. Tweens will have a chance to stack life-sized Jenga poetry blocks, constructing funny, original poems while competing to see whose team can build the tallest Jenga tower. For ages 9-13.

• Jane in July Film Series (Week 3)

The “Jane in July” Film Series continues this Thursday, July 20,  at 6:30 p.m. in the Community Room at the Library. The series will run through the end of the month. A complete listing of the films can be found on the Library’s website. In this week’s film from 1996, a mischievous young woman tries to play matchmaker with others’ lives with disastrous results before she herself falls in love.
