Danville Eclipse, 2017

The much anticipated nearly total eclipse of the sun in Danville Monday afternoon brought out about 400 people to the Boyle County Public library by 1 p.m. — all in hopes of receiving a free pair of special glasses to watch the eclipse. The first person in line was Eleanor Bailey of Lincoln County, who arrived at 9 a.m., followed by Emily Bates of Junction City. The library gave away 200 pair of glasses for the event. It also furnished snacks for the occasion, including sun tea, moon pies and Sun Chips. Once the glasses were all gone, most of the crowd faded away, while others stayed and watched the eclipse via a TV monitor and chatted with each other sharing peeks through their homemade viewing boxes.

About 300 students at Jennie Rogers Elementary School went outside and sat on blankets while wearing their special masks made from paper plates fitted with their eclipse glasses. Since the big glasses have gaps that could damage little faces and eyes if the students aren’t careful, the masks added extra protection for the students. While waiting and watching the sun, teachers passed out bags of popcorn and some gave out Eclipse gum.
