About 80 people turned out at the Danville-Boyle County Senior Citizens Center to celebrate Senior Citizen’s Day on Monday.

Of those, about 30 were regular attendees of the center, said Director Ben Guerrant. Others included city and county officials and community members.

Boyle County Judge-Executive Harold McKinney and Danville Mayor Mike Perros were on hand to make presentations to Guerrant regarding the proclamations made by their respective governing bodies that reaffirm Aug. 21 as Senior Citizens Day in Boyle County and Danville, respectively, and cited portions of the original proclamation made by President Ronald Reagan.

 On Aug. 19, 1988, President Ronald Reagan established National Senior Citizens Day to be held on Aug. 21, 1988, following House Joint Resolution 138.

The proclamation is archived in the Reagan Library, available via the online archives at http://bit.ly/2aNCTr4.

“For all they have achieved throughout life and for all they continue to accomplish, we owe older citizens our thanks and a heartfelt salute,” it reads.

“We can best demonstrate our gratitude and esteem by making sure that our communities are good places in which to mature and grow older —  places in which older people can participate to the fullest and can find the encouragement, acceptance, assistance, and services they need to continue to lead lives of independence and dignity.”
