John Stephen Cornwell
1932-2017
John Stephen Cornwell, 85, of Salvisa, Kentucky, formerly of Dixon, Illinois, died on Wednesday, September 6, at Thomson-Hood Veterans Center, Wilmore, Kentucky. He owned and operated the Cornwell Barber Shop in Dixon for 55 years, and also served as a corrections officer for the Illinois Department of Corrections for 16 years, prior to his retirement.
Mr. Cornwell was born July 6, 1932, in Dixon, Illinois, and was the son of John Hardin Cornwell and Catherine Docter Cornwell. John married Shirley Williams on May 16, 1957, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Dixon. He served in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of St. Andrews Catholic Church in Harrodsburg, Kentucky.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Shirley; two daughters, Sandra (Tony) Wilder, Danville, Kentucky, and Barbara Kargel, Lexington, Kentucky; and two grandchildren, Erica and Clint Wilder of Danville, Kentucky. John was preceded in death by a daughter, Cynthia and a son, Michael.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. at Preston-Schilling Funeral Home on Friday, September 8. Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. on Saturday at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Dixon, with Father Keith Romke officiating. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery, Dixon, with full military honors.
Walden Funeral Home Perryville is handling local arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations made to the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA).
