Masonic Lodge breakfast to be served

Danville’s Franklin Masonic Lodge will have a country breakfast 7-10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 7 at the lodge hall, 400 North Fourth St. The menu includes pork tenderloin, country ham, sausage, bacon, pancakes, eggs, potatoes, biscuits, gravy, coffee, orange juice and pastries. Everyone is welcome.

Diabetes Support Group offered at McDowell Wellness Center

McDowell Wellness Center is hosting a Diabetes Support Group meeting at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 10 with Kathy Herald, R.N., a chronic kidney disease educator  who will educate patients with chronic kidney disease and reach out to the community to bring awareness to this silent killer. Kidney disease affects one in nine Americans and most people don’t know it. Diabetes is the number one cause of chronic kidney disease.

The Diabetes Support Group meets at McDowell Wellness Center on the second Tuesday of every month at 5:30 p.m. There are no fees or dues. For more information, call (859) 936-9355.

 

Three-part series on Alzheimer’s offered 

Morning Pointe of Danville will be hosting a three-part series on Alzheimer’s and a dementia discussion from 6-7 p.m. on Oct. 11, 17 and 24.

On Wednesday, Oct. 11 Katherine E. Nicholas, MS, OTR/L, CDP will discuss activities of daily living around the home and assistance with basic needs.

 Tuesday, Oct. 17, Dr. Brian Ellis will explain starting the care process, medical approaches, navigating the diagnosis and what’s best for your loved ones.

 Tuesday, Oct. 24, Mariah Fosdick, Lantern Program Director at Morning Pointe of Danville, will explain what is the Lantern and share information on programs, support groups and community outreach for Alzheimer’s patients.

McDowell Wellness Center will host AARP Driver Safety Program on Oct. 11

Individuals who are age 55 or older are invited to participate in an AARP Driver Safety Program sponsored by McDowell Wellness Center. The course iwill be 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.  Wednesday, Oct. 11. The cost is $15 for AARP members (bring AARP card to class) or $20 for non-AARP members. Refreshments will be provided.

This course is sanctioned by the AARP. Individuals who complete the course may be eligible for a five-year discount on their automobile insurance. You do not have to be a member of AARP or McDowell Wellness Center to participate.

Panel discussion on climate change

The Women’s Network of Boyle County is hosting a public meeting featuring a panel discussion on climate change at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 10 at the community room at Inter-County Energy Cooperative, 1009 Hustonville Road. The scientific, economic and policy aspects of climate change will be addressed, and there will be time for questions and discussion.

The panel includes Preston Miles and David Anderson, both of Centre College, and Lisa Abbott of Kentuckians for the Commonwealth.

Increased ocean temperatures, melting polar ice and rising sea levels are scientifically linked to human pollution, though discussion continues on the intensity and imminence of the crisis. There is even greater disagreement on the economic and policy shifts necessary to deal with these problems.

Free flu shot clinic Oct. 14 and 15

HARRODSBURG — Ephraim McDowell Health is sponsoring free flu shot clinics in October at St. Andrews Catholic Church in Harrodsburg. The free clinic will be offered from 4:30-7 p.m. on Oct. 14 and 9 a.m.-noon on Oct. 15. Appointments can be made by calling (270) 316-8654, but walk-ins are welcome.  Flu shots are available for anyone 18 years of age and older.
