Janie-Rice Brother, an architectural historian, of Lexington, will be speaker for a gathering of Boyle Landmark Trust from 4 to 6 p.m. Oct. 22 at Ephraim McDowell House and Apothecary on South Second Street.

“The Spirit of Preservation” is the theme of the Trust’s fall meeting where guests can enjoy the historic home and gardens, refreshments and entertainment.

Brother’s topic will be the spirit of preservation and how people can make a difference in small ways in their communities.

Brother calls herself a farmer’s daughter and an architectural historian with a penchant for old barns, English gardens and stories of all kinds.

She is a graduate of Centre College and University of Kentucky, and serves as senior architectural historian at University of Kentucky Department of Anthropology.

Through her blog, Gardens to Gables, Brother highlights stories of historic buildings and landscapes, both in Kentucky and further afield. 

She has worked across the Southeast, Mid-Atlantic and Northeast on projects ranging from the documentation of over 400 historic farms in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, to postwar neighborhoods in Louisville.

She has served on the board of directors for numerous nonprofits, including Preservation Kentucky and the National Barn Alliance, and she co-founded Preserve Lexington to save a block of historic buildings in downtown Lexington.

In 2014, she was selected as an Attingham Scholar, and attended the prestigious Attingham Summer School, an internationally renowned program in England for museum professionals and scholars devoted to the study of British architecture, art, furnishings, decorative finishes, gardens and landscapes. 

 She lives in a 1925 bungalow in Lexington with her husband, daughter, two dogs and an exuberant cottage garden. 

Pianist Matthew Greenleaf will present will provide music.

Tickets for the event are $35 per person. Proceeds will benefit Boyle Landmark Trust and its work in preservation of historic properties.
