Paving begins in Danville

The Allen Company will begin milling and paving Walnut Street (between Fifth and Harding), College Street (between Walnut and Russell) and Fifth Street (between Main and Lexington Avenue) on Saturday, Oct. 14. Work is expected to continue Monday and Tuesday, October 16 and 17, weather permitting. All on street parking will be prohibited while work is occurring. ‘Mare Rider’ tickets can be purchased online

“Mare Rider,” the latest offering by Scarlet Cup Theater, goes up 8 p.m. Oct. 19-21, 3 p.m. Oct. 22, and again 8 p.m. Oct. 26-28. The play will be performed in historic Jacobs Hall on Kentucky School for the Deaf’s campus. Tickets are $20 for general admission and $10 for students, and in addition to purchasing them by calling the box office at (859) 319-1204, they may also be purchased by visiting scarletcuptheater.org. 

For both Thursday performances, the award-winning KSD culinary arts team will provide homemade treats for sale as a team fundraiser. 

Also, as a part of education outreach by the theater, “Mare Rider — Mystic Women of our Dreams” will be 3 p.m. Sunday at the Boyle County Public Library, presented by the play’s director, Tony Haigh, and Phyllis Passariello, retired professor of anthropology from Centre College. The two will focus on giving others a richer understanding of the play and explore the realities of the myths and folk behind the story. 

Free computer classes offered at library 

In the ongoing effort to promote lifelong learning, the Boyle County Public Library offers a wide variety of free computer classes throughout month. This week, the library is offering the following classes:

• Board Games Gone Mobile— 11 a.m. Tuesday.  During this session we will explore the many board games that have been converted into mobile apps that can be downloaded for free on your favorite devices. Participants should bring their Google or App Store login information.

• Create Your Own e-Newsletter — 2 p.m. Thursday.  This session will explore Canva, a free online design site that allows users to create personal email newsletters that can be shared with friends and family. Participants will experiment with some of the editing options available. (Basic computer and internet skills are recommended.)

Radio club now meets at American Legion 

The Wilderness Road Amateur Radio Club meets 7:30 p.m. the fourth Tuesday of every month at the American Legion Boyle Post 46, 45 Spears Lane in Danville. For more information, visit www.wrarc.com. 

Drive thru flu clinic at the Boyle County Health Department

The Boyle County Health Department will be offering a drive thru flu clinic from 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 17.

Most insurances accepted. Otherwise, cost is $25 for a regular dose or $50 for a high dose, for those over 65. 

Ephraim sponsoring free screening

Ephraim McDowell Health is sponsoring a free health screening at Perryville Baptist Church on Wednesday, Oct. 25. The screenings will be offered from 4:30 to 7 p.m.

Health screenings that will be offered are cholesterol, glucose, blood pressure, body mass index, stroke-risk scorecard and flu shots. After the screenings are complete, participants will have the opportunity to discuss their results with a licensed health professional.

Participants should not eat 12 hours prior to their screening if they would like to have the blood test that gives them a full lipid panel. This gives the participant detailed information including their HDL, LDL, triglycerides and glucose. Medications except for diabetic medications may be taken with water.
