Dear Editor,

Joe Martin was a larger-than-life man who contributed enormously to his church, his profession, his community and his world.

In addition to his renown as an interior designer and many other accomplishments in other areas of his life, Joe will be remembered for his wisdom, wit and that smile that could light up any room.

One of my favorite memories came three decades ago or so when I, a new reporter/columnist wth The Advocate-Messenger, attended my first local political rally.

I happened to stand next to this fellow wearing what I later called a “truth whistle.” He would blow it every time he thought a speaker was lying. I laughed so hard it was difficult to take notes. That fellow turned out to be Joe Martin and I actually looked forward to every future local political rally I would attend knowing he and his whistle would be there.
