McDowell Wellness Center offering Parkinson’s exercise program

Ephraim McDowell Health

McDowell Wellness Center is offering PWR!Moves, a program designed for individuals with Parkinson’s disease. Classes will begin on Nov. 14 and will meet each Tuesday and Thursday at 11 a.m. Class size is limited. The cost is $30 for a three-week session.

According to the Parkinson’s Foundation, research shows that people with Parkinson’s disease who participate in at least 2.5 hours of exercise a week had a better quality of life than those who didn’t exercise at all or started exercising later.

The essential principles of PWR!Moves are to support progressive aerobics and Parkinson’s disease-specific functional skills through personalized coaching and wellness education to overcome non-motor symptoms, stress, and the inactivity that interferes with physical capacity and quality of life. The mission of PWR!Moves is to coordinate and integrate medical/rehabilitation goals with community-based exercise programming.

PWR!Moves exercises are performed with large amplitude, high effort and attention to action in multiple postures that specifically target antigravity extension, weight shifting, axial mobility and transitional movements — skills shown by research to interfere with mobility in people with Parkinson’s disease. The exercises can be adapted for disease severity as well as to target different symptoms. Classes may incorporate various equipment, music, dance, boxing, pole walking, cycling, chair and/or floor exercises, and aquatic training sessions.
