Students at Hogsett Elementary School were surprised when their counselor came riding in on a motorcycle Monday afternoon during a pep rally at the school.

The rally was for the Kentucky Performance Rating for Education Progress assessment tests, K-PREP, which start this week for students in the Danville Schools.

After getting off the motorcycle driven by community member David Arnold, counselor Nicky King picked up a fake guitar and began rocking out “I love taking tests,” to the tune of “I Love Rock and Roll.”

She was joined by Principal Leo Labrillazo, also “playing” guitar, and other educators providing back up.

Testing begins today for students in third- through fifth-grades, and goes through Monday. On Wednesday, all students at John W. Bate Middle School will begin their assessment testing, going through Tuesday; Danville High School juniors will undergo assessment testing on May 16.

After singing, students were selected from each grade to participate in a bowling game. The good faith reward for the Hogsett kids after the tests will be to go bowling, King said.

She and Labrillazo spoke to the kids, encouraging them to do their best on the test and reviewing principles they had discussed in preparation, such as getting a good night’s sleep, eating a good breakfast and taking their time.

Assessment testing will vary per district and grad:

• Danville students in grades 3-5 begin testing today through Monday, May 14;

• Danville students in grades 6-8 will undergo testing Wednesday through Tuesday, May 15;

• Danville juniors will be tested on May 16, by completing on-demand writing;

• Boyle County students in grades 6-8 will undergo testing May 14-18;

• Boyle County students in grades 3-5 will undergo testing May 16-18 and 21-22; and

• Boyle County juniors will undergo testing on May 22, by completing on-demand writing.
