Open meeting on gun  violence offered June 12 

“Responding to Gun Violence” is the topic of the next open meeting of The Women’s Network 7 p.m. June 12 at the Inter-County Energy Community Room, 1009 Hustonville Road in Danville.

The panel includes Danville Chief of Policy Tony Gray speaking about public security, Rollin Tartar (chair of Safe Communities) addressing public health concerns and Lynsey Sugarman, a Lexington leader of Moms Demand Action, volunteer advocates for Gun Sense in America.

The panel and participants will discuss what aspects of gun safety and regulation can impact our huge gun violence problem. All are welcome to come and take part. For more information, call (859) 236-9305

Fund-raiser to benefit cadets

The Stuart Powell Cadet Squadron 122 Civil Air Patrol will be participating in the Driven to Give fund-raising event, sponsored by Lincoln Motor Company from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 16 at Stuart Powell Ford-Lincoln Mazda dealership located at 225 South Danville Bypass.

For every person who test drives a new Lincoln vehicle and completes a short survey, the dealership and Lincoln will donate $20 to the local cadet Civil Air Patrol squadron. Test drivers must be age 18 or older and have a valid driver’s license and insurance.

Wellness Center offering swim lessons

McDowell Wellness Center is offering two sessions of swimming lessons. Participants can choose to attend session one that begins on Monday, June 4 or session two that begins on Monday, June 18.  Each session will meet Monday through Thursday for two weeks.  Participants can also choose to attend a 4 p.m. or 5 p.m. class for each session. Each lesson is 45 minutes.

Classes are available for all age groups and are taught by certified instructors. Please call McDowell Wellness Center at (859) 936-9355 for a detailed list of class times and levels.

Wellness Center hosting 10K run 

McDowell Wellness Center offers its 15th Annual 10K Run on Saturday, June 23. The center’s 10K is a participant of the Race the Trace Run Series.R ace begins at 8 a.m. (check-in 6:30 a.m.) at McDowell Wellness Center, located at 1107 Ben Ali Drive in Danville. Registration forms are available at McDowell Wellness Center, Danville Bike and Footwear or you can register online at runsignup.com/race/ky/danville/mcdowellwellnesscenter10k. Advance registration is $20 while the late registration fee (for those received after June 20) is $25.

Awards will be given to the first-place overall female and male runners as well as to the first-, second- and third-place female and male runners in each age division, excluding overall winners. All entrants will receive a T-shirt.

Family Services releases quarterly report

Family Services Association of Boyle County Inc. recently released its quarterly report to the public. The organization provides short-term financial assistance to those experiencing temporary financial emergency. It also assists clients in identifying other programs and services that can contribute to their financial stability on a long-term basis. 

The quarterly report reflects the moths of January through March, 2018. Throughout that period, 370 total individuals were served; that includes 123 children 17 and under, and 96 seniors 55 and over. Referrals to other non-financial services totaled 21; that includes 6 children 17 and under, and 3 seniors 55 and older. 

Year to date, from July 1-March 31, 83 percent received financial assistance and did not return during that time frame (94 percent did not return, if omitting those who were seniors).

Wallace, U.S. Army, Civil War; Thomas Wallace, U.S. Army, Civil War; and Sylvester “Bud” Roach, U.S. Army, World War II.
