Visual artists in Danville and the surrounding region will have several opportunities to exhibit and sell their work at the Community Arts Center in the latter half of 2018. The arts center currently has two open “calls to artists” — one for landscape art and one for hand-crafted gifts.

Horizon: Contemporary Landscape

Artists working in any medium are invited to submit work for the Horizon: Contemporary Landscape exhibit. Now in its ninth year, the Horizon exhibit draws submissions from artists across the country. As the name suggests, the focus of the exhibit is contemporary landscape artwork.

Creative Director Brandon Long says, “This exhibit tests the limits of what you think of when you hear the word landscape. While many artists portray classic landscape paintings, others delve into more abstract realms, submitting everything from collage and photography to mixed media and cast metal sculpture. We want to see where your imagination takes you as an artist.”

The juror for the 2018 Horizon exhibit is Isabella La Rocca, assistant professor of art at Centre College. La Rocca is a visual artist who works primarily with photography and motion pictures.

Her work is part of a long tradition in photography: to bring to light and find beauty in the disregarded. Awards for her work include the Ferguson Grant from the Friends of Photography in San Francisco, California, for excellence and commitment to the field of photography. Her photographs have been exhibited throughout the United States, including a solo show at the Center for Photography in Woodstock, New York.

Artists may submit up to six works of art for consideration for the show. The entry fee for one to three works is $25 and the fee forfour to six works is $35. The application deadline is Aug. 1 and the exhibit will be on display from Sept. 7 to Nov. 4. Cash prizes are awarded for the top three artworks — $500 for first place, $250 for second, and $100 for third. Full details can be found online at www.communityartscenter.net/horizon.

Holiday Market

The Holiday Market at the Community Arts Center will return on Nov. 15. The market debuted last year with great success, generating more than $9,000 in art sales. The arts center is currently accepting applications from artists interested in selling their work at the 2018 Holiday Market. Artists are asked to complete an online application (found at communityartscenter.net/holiday-market) and submit three representative photos of their work. A committee will select which artists to participate in the market.

“One of the advantages to artists of participating in the Holiday Market is that the arts center curates the pieces and handles the sales,” says Long. “The artist does not have to staff a booth, unlike at an art fair. This makes it possible for artists to sell their work at multiple venues during the holiday season.”

There is no charge to participate in the Holiday Market. The Arts Center retains a 30-percent commission on all work sold.

“We encourage artists to think about their audience when applying for the market,” says Long. “People are looking for holiday gifts at the market. The pieces that sold best last year were priced at or below $50 and were ‘giftable’ items. With a few exceptions, things like pottery, jewelry and small fine art sold better than large paintings.”

Arts Commission still accepting applications for artist mentoring program

The Arts Commission of Danville/Boyle County has extended its deadline for its new artist mentoring program — “Building a Community of Artist Entrepreneurs.”

The program will pair established artists in the community with emerging artists. The artists and their apprentices will work one-on-one and participate in group activities, field trips, and professional development sessions.
