The Seth King Memorial Golf Tournament is back for its 19th year.

It’s a scramble held at Old Bridge Golf Course honoring former Danville High School golfer Seth King. King died in a car accident in 1999.

Dan Schott is the tournament director and golfed with King for two years at Danville. He’s excited for the event again this year and will award a scholarship to Madeline VonLinger of Boyle County. This year, the tournament will be held Saturday, July 14.

“We’ve probably given a scholarship in the last five or six years, we’ve raised enough money to generate a scholarship,” Schott said. “In years past we’ve given it to two recipients, it just depends on how much money we raise.”

Former Boyle County coach Sandy Waters reaches out to coaches across the area for nominations: Last year, Brennan Walton of Mercer County earned the scholarship. Lincoln County’s Kaycie Bandura won the year before and Dakota Jarman of Boyle County is also a previous winner.

“We want to give it to someone who will need help financially going to school. It’s more driven to alleviating pressure as far as books go or golf costs go in college,” Schott said. “We don’t dictate where the money goes but we try to find the recipient who is going to get the most out of it.

“We’ve had Danville, Boyle, Mercer, Lincoln award winners. Sandy does a tremendous job of getting me in contact with the people involved for the scholarship.”

Schott said that the event is still open for sponsors of all kinds and golfers.

“Matt Walters, every year has been a corporate sponsor. John Frey with Papa John’s, he’s an annual supporter. We’ve had on and off support in the community,” Schott said. “We do hole sponsors, Bruce Brown was involved with the tournament since day one, he’s a hole sponsor every year. Bruce was Seth’s instructor for a lot of years.”

The monies generated by the event go toward the Seth King Memorial Scholarship Foundation, and scholarships given each year are given by the foundation.

“The event itself takes care of the golf course, we do a logoed shirt that is given to the players,” Schott said. “The event takes care of the golf and the shirt, it’s the donations and the charity donations, hole prizes, hole sponsors are donated. That’s where we generate money. The more awareness we can get in the community, it’s truly a fundraising event, I hope we can get more participants and donations.”

Hole sponsorships are $100 and cart sponsorships are $25.

“Donations welcome in any form, monetary or product for hole prizes,” Schott said. “We’re looking for support from the community for a good cause.”

It’s $50 per player if signed up by July 1 and $60 per player after. The scramble gets started July 14 at noon with a shotgun start.
