Mindfulness Mondays

Once a month, the Library provides a quiet space in the Mahan Gallery for anyone wanting to practice meditation and mindfulness. This monthly series combines crafting and mindfulness education.  On Monday, July 23 at 6:30 p.m., Santosh David Smith will lead participants in making Mini Zen Gardens. They will learn how to craft a miniature rock garden to take home, as well as how to use it to help promote calm and mindfulness.

Broadway Musicals Costume Party, On Thursday, July 26 at 4 p.m., the library will host a Broadway musicals themed costume party for tweens. Celebrate summer with a costume bash filled with games, trivia, and snacks inspired by Broadway musicals. Those attending can either wear a costume to the event or make their own costume accessories at the party. For ages 9-13.

History Café: Beta Test of a History Crate, On Thursday, July 26 at 6 p.m., the Library will host the History Café. This monthly event provides a place where people can gather and chat about local history. This month will feature an examination of history through objects with a beta test of a History Crate. The crate contains educational materials and objects from the local area. It has been developed to teach technology, history, and how to look at objects to grade school children. While the crate is designed for a younger audience, it still needs to be tested before making it available to them. All are invited to take part in a fun evening of examining our local history. The History Crate is made possible by a grant from the Hudson-Ellis Fund.

Mammoth Cave: “Rocks, Fossils, and Other Cool Stuff”, On Friday, July 27 the library will host two sessions of “Rocks, Fossils, and Other Cool Stuff.” The first session begins at 12:30 p.m. and is for children in preschool through 1st grade. The second session begins at 2 p.m. and is for students in grades 2 – 6. In both sessions, “campers” will be introduced to Park Ranger Jennifer Shackelford via webcam and will learn interesting scientific and historical facts about Mammoth Cave National Park. They will be able to touch rocks and fossils from the Mammoth Cave area and learn about why Kentucky has the world’s longest cave. Participants will also be able to “ask a Ranger” questions during these live interactive sessions. This program is sponsored by the McDowell House Museum.
