Dear Editor,

It is my pleasure to pen this letter today on behalf of my fellow members and officers of the Wilderness Road Amateur Radio Club (W4CDA) here in Danville. We all enjoyed Casey Craiger’s visit while were set up and participating in the annual American Radio Relay League (ARRL) Field Day Competition. We also were pleasantly surprised with the great article that she wrote and was published in the June 26 edition of The Advocate Messenger.

Casey took the time to participate and get a real understanding of who we are, our history, our purpose, as well as the purpose of our participation in field day. She accurately and concisely articulated her research and interviews into an informative and interesting article.

There is no need to recap the entire article in detail, but she covered not only the history of our local club, but also the history and purpose for the hobby itself. She covered the important role that HAM Radio can and does play in the event of disaster, emergency, wartime efforts, and capturing the fact that we were set up that day running on generator and solar power with temporary antennas to simulate what we would actually face while operating in an emergency environment. She helped the reader understand our cooperative relationship with the American Legion and our local Post No. 46.

Just as a brief follow-up to the article, while we don’t yet know how we fared in the competitive aspects of Field Day, we did make over 500 unique contacts across 45 states and 4 countries, as far away as Morocco.
