The Arts Commission of Danville-Boyle County’s Building a Community of Artist Entrepreneurs program got to work with the first meeting of the mentor artists and their apprentices this week. The five selected apprentices are:
• Eliza Marsh, a student at Burgin Independent, who is already performing with two bands and will be studying music event management and performance with Travis Kern.
• Marie Taylor, a glass artist who will be working to expand her glass work into new areas with Roni Gilpin.
• Abby Quirk-Royal, a graduate of Centre College who is experienced with basket-making will be working with Deborah Peckler to learn needle felting.
• Grace McDaniel, a senior at Boyle County High School will be working with Jacquie Woodward to expand her skills in wearable art.
• Mayme Taylor, a sophomore at Boyle County High School, will be working with Kathleen O’Brien in several areas of visual art and marketing.
The full group will have opportunities to meet as individual teams, as a full group and to participate in field experiences across the state during the program, which runs through April 2019. The participants will also be exhibiting their individual and team work at the June 2019 Gallery Hop.
Also, Scarlet Cup Theater’s “Departures” tickets are available online at danvillearts.org. Performances will be held at the Stuart Powell Field Airport the weekends of Oct. 4-6 and 7-11.
The Arts Commission and the Pieceable Friends Quilt Guild will again hold a Civil War Quilt Workshop Oct. 4-5 at the Perryville Jamboree. Registration and information is available at arts@historicdanvilleky.com. Class fee includes instruction and patterns for historically appropriate Civil War era quilt blocks. Instructors Linda Marean and Shelia Dolan will assist quilters from beginner to experienced level.
Quilters who work by hand or by machine are welcome. The weekend will conclude with an exhibit of both antique and reproduction Civil War era quilts 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Oct. 6h at the Jamboree. Quilters will be demonstrating quilting techniques and exhibiting antique sewing machines. The Saturday event is free and open to the public.
