He was born on November 28, 1945, in Albuquerque, New Mexico to Paul and Frances (Hinton) Shields. John graduated from Eastern Kentucky University with top honors in mathematics and physics. After graduation, he held a career at IBM as a computer programmer, but always pursued his love for farming. During this time, he met and married the love of his life, Mary Virginia “Ginger” Shields. During the 45 years of their marriage, he created a prosperous family farm which will continue on as a legacy to his iron will, intellect, and unsurpassed work ethic that is of mythical proportions. He also fathered and raised two proud sons who will forever love and remember him with the utmost respect and admiration. He was known affectionately as “MoDaddy” to Malorea, Samuel, and Grace Shields, his grandchildren.

John is preceded in death by his parents and brother.

He is survived by his wife, Ginger; sons, John Paul (Jessica) and Benjamin (Amanda); grandchildren, Malorea, Samuel, and Grace; sister-in-law, Cordelia; and nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held Thursday, September 27, 2018 at Lexington Cemetery.

Remembrances can go to any no kill animal shelter of your choice in honor of him.
