Danville’s Sallee, Updike winners at Dragon Invitational

Danville wrestling rebounded after a mid-week loss at Boyle County with some impressive results at South Oldham’s Dragon Invitational on Saturday.

Morgan Sallee (113 pound weight class) and Spencer Updike (220) each won individual titles as the Admirals placed seventh as a team.

“We had a good day,” head coach Joey Sallee said. “I told our guys going into this that it was a tough tournament, and they really responded.”

The result was an impressive one for Updike, coach Sallee said.

“This is definitely the best performance we have ever had out of Spencer,” he said. “His finals match was a close one, but he wrestled smart and came out with the win.”

After Morgan Sallee and Updike, Micah Chappell was a runner-up in the 120-pound weight class. Pierce Haines (285) placed fourth.

Coach Sallee said that three wrestlers — Ethan Scott (195), Christian Poynter (138) and Colby Stevenson (182) all finished one match away of placing.

“I told the kids that some of these schools didn’t even know where Danville was, and that no one expected much out of them at the Dragon,” coach Sallee said. “I think it left them with a little bit of a chip on their shoulders.”
