Prom is a rite of passage: girls search months for the perfect dress. Boys have to find a tux that matches their date’s dress precisely, figure out what in the world a corsage is, and then buy just the right one for their date. On top of that, girls have their hair, makeup and nails done just for this one night. The question left standing is why do all this preparation for one night?

After sitting down with junior, Lina Morales, a member of the DHS Prom Committee, she said “hard work and dedication” go into planning prom. With that being said, the students are very involved in the planning aspect of it all. Morales also said, “[I am] Very involved. My Mom’s a party planner and when I told her about it she immediately wanted to help.”

Mrs. Calvert, the Prom Committee Sponsor, said it takes a lot of preparation on behalf of students and staff. “We have to have meetings to decide theme, venue, DJ, then meeting with the venue for a site visit, and then more meeting to prepare decorations.” This year’s prom at DHS theme will be Hollywood.

A lot of time and money go into prom. Senior Isaiah Miller said, “Girls spend an average of $500 on prom verses where guys only spend $200.” Other students estimate the spending to be much higher. One senior, Morgan Vest, said she believed girls spend about “$800 or more on prom.”

The amount spent on prom is one thing, but how long do girls versus guys really spend getting ready? Senior Isaiah Miller said, “Guys only take one to two hours.” The girls’ point of view is different from the boys. Sophomore Alexis Weathers said, “It takes about four hours to get ready.”

Prom is a time of year that you will remember for the rest of your life. How many times are you going to be able to get dressed up to go to a dance with your highschool buddies? The answer is not very many. So all this preparation is worth the one last dance in high school is worth it.
