Community members are invited to participate in the nationwide Lights for Liberty Vigil to End Human Detention Centers from 7-9 p.m. Friday at Weisiger Park, in front of the Boyle County Courthouse.

Lights for Liberty will bring thousands of Americans together to protest conditions faced by refugees. Currently, there are 544 events planned across the globe.

Legislators, local politicians, musicians, choirs, clergy and activists have been invited to participate in Danville. At 9 p.m. here, as well as across the country and around the world, a silent sea of candles will light up the night.

Julie Pease, one of the event organizers, said, “We welcome every person, organization and faith group who cares about our immigration detention policies. We believe that now is the time for every person to stand up and say, ‘This is not who we are as a nation. We will not accept this!’ No more denial. No more fear. We need to be loud and clear and unrelenting — that is the only way we can stop these inhumane policies.”

The main event will be in El Paso, Texas where migrants are housed under a bridge for months without running water. Other key events are planned in Homestead, Florida at a migrant child detention center at which massive abuse and neglect have been reported; San Diego, California near the point of entry from Tijuana, Mexico; New York City at Foley Square, where hundreds of migrants are processed through detention each day; and in D.C., in front of the Capitol, to demand action from Congress.
