Danville Police are continuing to investigate a shooting incident that occurred in the early morning of July 7 near Club 859ers, located at 512 S. Fourth St. near Danville Church of God.

According to Danville Assistant Police Chief Glenn Doan, police investigators have recovered at least 80 rounds of spent shell casings that were fired from three different weapons. “So at least three people fired the shots,” Doan said.

No injuries were reported that morning. However, a car parked near the church was hit by a bullet, Doan said. A building may have also been hit, but there was very little damage.

“We believe most shots were fired up in the air,” Doan said, “which created a very dangerous environment.”

A party was being held at the club when the shootings happened, he said.

Doan said a few witnesses have come forward and described what they saw on the morning of the shooting, but they couldn’t identify the shooters. Investigators have received “a limited amount of cooperation” from witnesses at the party, Doan said.

Police are using security footage provided by Church of God and Bryan Montgomery, pastor of the church, which caught the entire event, along with witness statements to identify those who were responsible for the shootings, Doan said.

“Suspects will be identified.”

According to police, a call of multiple shots being fired at Cub 859ers on S. Fourth Street came into the dispatch center at 2:37 a.m. on Saturday, July 7. As Sgt. Broach arrived on scene, he saw a vehicle speeding away from the area. He attempted to do a traffic stop of the suspect’s vehicle and during the short pursuit, Broach saw a handgun being thrown from the vehicle, according to police.

When the vehicle stopped, three occupants were detained. After further investigation, the driver, Dejan Haddis, 33, of Washington D.C., was found to be driving while intoxicated. The passengers, Arieyon Smith of Lebanon and Royce Booker of Danville were also found to be intoxicated.

All three subjects were taken into custody. However, “we have not made any connection between the people arrested in the car and shots fired,” Doan said.

Smith and Booker were charged with public intoxication.

Haddis was charged with disregarding a stop sign; reckless driving; driving on a suspended license; first-degree fleeing or evading police; possession of an open alcohol container in a vehicle; tampering with physical evidence; theft by unlawful taking or disposition of a firearm.

As of Monday afternoon, Haddis was being held on a $15,000 cash bond.
