This week our featured pets are Dontay and Dixie.

Dontay is a handsome 3-year-old domestic short hair. He’s truly a “golden boy” with his orange tabby coat, deep gold eyes and cute pick nose. Dontay was surrendered to the humane society because his owner could not care for all of his pets. Dontay is a quiet fellow and pretty low maintenance. He accepts but does not demand attention. He has been getting along fine in one of our kitty condos sharing space with several other adult cats. Dontay is ready to bring his golden glow to your home if you choose him for adoption.

Dixie is a sweet 6-year-old black and white Australian Shepherd mix. She has a very pretty face with soulful brown eyes and weighs 50 pounds. Dixie was surrendered to the humane society because her owner did not have time to care for a dog. Poor Dixie came in with such a matted coat, that she had to be sheared, except for her head. Although Dixie isn’t at her prettiest, over the next few months she will metamorphose into a gorgeous girl. If you decide to take this girl home, you will have the privilege of watching her transformation, and receiving lots of love in the process

Our Mutts With Manners program was developed to help some of the humane society adult dogs find loving homes. This program is great for adopters who are interested in adding a new canine companion to their home but prefer not to go through the various stages of puppyhood with a new dog. Sponsored by the DBCHS in conjunction with the Northpoint Training Center in Burgin, specially selected inmates train the shelter dogs for a 6-8 week period. The dogs learn basic obedience, socialization skills, crate-training and usually a few tricks along the way to help them become more adoptable.
