Correction

The date of Stuart Powell’s death was incorrect in the story headlined “Preparing for takeoff” in the  weekend issue. Powell died on Sept. 9, 2017.

Summer Singer concert tonight

“Sister Cities — Sister Songs” is the title of the program that will be presented by Summer Singers 7:30 p.m. tonight (Tuesday, July 20) at The Presbyterian Church of Danville, 500 W. Main St   The free program will be the first to be presented under our new fiscal sponsor, The Arts Commission of Danville-Boyle County.

In anticipation of the choir’s trip to Ireland in October 2020, it will perform pieces in several American music traditions — Shaker, shape-note, spiritual and jazz — as well as a couple of pieces from Ireland and by Irish composers.  As usual, the audience will join the choir for three singalong songs: a favorite hymn of Irish descent, an African-American spiritual and a very simple Shaker song.

The choir will be accepting donations for its tour fund in lieu of any ticket cost.

Blood drive

Kentuckians can save a  local patient’s life at the upcoming blood drive and be automatically entered to win a 2019 Toyota Tacoma. The Kentucky Blood Center blood drive will be held Saturday, Aug. 17 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. on the KBC Bloodmobile that will be parked at the Danville Walmart, 100 Walton Ave. To schedule a donation, visit kybloodcenter.org or call 800-775-2522. Walk-ins are also welcome.

Gov. Bevin makes appointment

FRANKFORT — Gov. Matt Bevin has appointed Amy Deniece Riley, of Harrodsburg, to represent the Kentucky School Counselors Association and serve for a term expiring March 11, 2023. Riley is a school counselor. The Kentucky Center for School Safety was established in 1998 by the General Assembly to create safe, secure learning environments in Kentucky schools. It is the center for data analysis, research, allocation of information about successful school safety programs, research results and new programs.
